Lines of research for Bipolar Disorder

Reading time: 1 min

In the last 20 years or so, a multitude of studies have been carried out and advances made as regards bipolar disorder, giving rise to new treatments, both pharmacological and psychological, almost every year. Furthermore, the advances in genetics, neuroimaging, and other laboratory tests, increasingly show more biological bases of the disorder, contributing to creating more and better treatments.

The main lines of research are currently focused on 3 fields:

  • Neurobiological. Genetics, neuromodulators, hormone factors, and neuroimaging.
  • Cognition and functionality. Evaluation and detection of cognitive and functional involvement, development and implementation of psychotherapeutic and pharmacological rehabilitation treatments.
  • Clinical and therapeutic correlates. Sub-types, schizoaffective disorder, comorbidities, evaluation scales, course of the disorder.
  • Precision therapeutics. Psychotherapies, mainly represented by psycho-education for patients and families, online interventions and smartphones. Pharmacological treatments and trials that attempt to personalise the treatment of each circumstance.
